Celebrated rock band The War on Drugs will headline The StubHub Music Experience at the South by Southwest Music festival this month in Austin, Texas, capping the three-day concert showcase with one of the biggest acts in rock music today.
Originally from Philadelphia, The War on Drugs are currently riding the runaway success of their third studio album Lost in the Dream, one of the most critically acclaimed albums of 2014. Anchored by the atmospheric guitar and vocals of front man Adam Granduciel, the record was the top-rated rock album of 2014 and the No. 3 album overall in the Village Voice’s annual “Pazz & Jop” poll, which compiled the votes of more than 600 music critics.
The album also finished No. 3 on Pitchfork’s Albums of the Year, with its guitar and synth-driven sounds drawing comparisons to the ’80s-era mainstream heyday of Bruce Springsteen and Dire Straits. The album – which examines the themes of heartbreak, disillusion and isolation under Granduciel’s steady hand – was dubbed “a spectacular example of channeling personal catharsis into great art” by Spin rock critic David Menconi when the album was released last March.
The War on Drugs have played SXSW once before – they drew rave reviews there in 2012 – and are currently on tour in the United Kingdom. They will return to the United States in March and perform at SXSW before beginning a US tour that will see them perform at the Coachella and Governor’s Ball music festivals, among other dates.
The StubHub Music Experience runs March 17-19 at Clive Bar, a 550-person venue in Austin’s Rainey Street Historic District. The War on Drugs will cap the three-day event, which also includes acclaimed synth-pop standouts Future Islands, Portland rockers Portugal. The Man, Daptone soul revivalists Charles Bradley & His Extraordinaires and veteran British rockers The Vaccines.
Fans are encouraged to RSVP for limited daytime capacity, and SXSW badge-holders are also welcome. Download the StubHub Music app at the iTunes App Store for access to exclusive interviews and videos with artists appearing at The StubHub Music Experience, including The War on Drugs.
